Linux Installation with Kickstart
Learn to automate Linux installations using Kickstart configuration files. In this practical workshop, you’ll create and validate a Kickstart file, use it to install a Linux system in a virtual machine, and troubleshoot common setup problems.
The exercises use Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or a compatible lab environment. The exact installation options and syntax can vary by release.
What you’ll learn
- Understand how Kickstart automates installation choices.
- Create and edit a Kickstart file for a repeatable installation.
- Configure basic installation options, package selection, storage, and users.
- Make the Kickstart file available to the installer.
- Run a test installation in a virtual machine.
- Validate the file and troubleshoot common syntax or installation errors.
- Make safe changes and test the file again.
Workshop activities
- Review the structure of a Kickstart file.
- Create a starter configuration for a virtual machine.
- Set installation and package options.
- Make the configuration available to the installer.
- Run a test installation and review the results.
- Adjust the configuration, validate it, and repeat the test.
Kickstart files can be created manually or adapted from an installation-generated file. A syntax validator can help identify errors, but a successful validation does not guarantee that an installation will complete successfully.
Who should attend?
Linux users, system administrators, IT support staff, and learners who want to make Linux installations more consistent and repeatable.
Prerequisites
You should be comfortable with basic Linux concepts and have some experience using a terminal. Familiarity with virtual machines is helpful.
What to bring
A laptop capable of running a virtual machine, if the workshop is delivered in person. The instructor will confirm the lab software, Linux release, and any other requirements before the workshop.
