Everyday Linux: A Practical User Workshop

Get comfortable using Linux for everyday tasks. This beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop covers email, printers, files, software updates, and common desktop settings. You’ll practise each task and learn where to look when something doesn’t work.

What you’ll learn

  • Find and open applications, manage windows, and adjust basic desktop settings.
  • Organize files and folders, connect a USB drive, and find downloaded documents.
  • Use webmail or set up an email application with the account details provided by your email provider.
  • Write and send messages, attach files, and find received attachments.
  • Add a USB or network printer, choose it when printing, and check basic printer settings.
  • Install software using your Linux system’s graphical software tool.
  • Check for system updates and understand when a restart may be needed.
  • Find basic help and troubleshoot common desktop problems.

Hands-on practice

Participants practise organizing a few files, sending an email with an attachment, adding or selecting a printer, and locating system updates. The instructor can adapt the exercises to the group’s Linux setup.

Who should attend?

Anyone new to Linux who wants to use it for everyday home, study, or office tasks. No command-line or programming experience is required.

What to bring

Bring your Linux laptop if you have one. For email practice, bring your account setup details if you know them; never share your password with the instructor. Printer exercises depend on the printers and network available at the workshop.

Linux menus and settings vary between desktop environments and distributions, so the workshop will use the setup available to the group.
